Release courtesy of OhioStateBuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Right around the time the USA Today Coaches Poll was released with Ohio State the No. 2 team in the nation behind Alabama, the Buckeyes marched onto the Harmon Family Football Park practice facility for the first practice of the 2010 campaign.

Officially, it was 8:53 a.m. when a specialists group of long snappers hit the new FieldTurf surface just west of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. At 9:23 a.m. the defense, clad in scarlet jerseys and new-look scarlet shorts, trotted onto the field with the defensive line first and followed by the defensive backs. Twelve minutes later the entire offensive contingent joined in for a practice that lasted a little over two hours.

It will be the only practice of the day today for the Buckeyes. The team will have just one practice a day until the first two-a-day next Wednesday.

The HFFP The Harmon Family Football Park, although still not completed, looks to be a textbook practice facility and those in the football world who visit it will want to take notes. A few of the neat aspects of the park:

There are several long, red brick water stations that are great places to sit when not in use by the trainers.

There is a water fountain near the entrance.

Team videographers can choose from any one of four giant towers – gray with scarlet roofing – with viewing platforms at 35- and 55-feet high.

The park is equipped with a six-speaker-two-sub-woofer system for practicing through loud crowd noise. The system can crank, we are told.

Practicing under the lights is now an option. Six towers hold 248 giant lights (31 per tower) that will have no trouble at all lighting the four fields.

There are two scoreboards and seven timing clocks.

Bleachers are located at the north end of the complex with another set in the southwest corner.

The Fields The two FieldTurf practice fields the team used today are the same surface as the team plays on in Ohio Stadium and at many of its road games. Ohio State does not play a game on grass this season with visits to Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa.

Unfinished are the two grass fields. They will be seeded with 100 percent Kentucky Blue Grass seed next week with some rye grass mixed in next year.

What They’re Wearing…

Shorts: The players new practice shorts were scarlet with a gray stripe down each side, an Ohio State logo on the lower right front and a “swoosh” on the lower left front.

Jerseys: The defense wore scarlet mesh jerseys and the offense wore white. There were five men in black jerseys: quarterbacks Terrelle Pryor, Joe Bauserman, Kenny Guiton, Justin Siems and Taylor Graham.

Spikes: Some new scarlet and black and some almost-glittery scarlet and black spikes were being worn on the practice fields, as well as solid black with white spikes.

Helmet: About 25 players are wearing the latest in the Riddell line of helmets. This new model actually uses an old school, soft bladder that is extremely comfortable. All the players’ helmets utilize an air management system.

A Beautiful Sight The offensive linemen pounded into a brand new seven-pad blocking sled on wheels. They pushed offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Jim Bollman, who was manning the sled, around the north end of one of the fields for a time.

The people came from all around Ohio to watch as he set the high school football fields on fire. Chic Harley was the purest running back to come out of the state and the rumors and legend of his ability grew as his high school career concluded. Choosing initially to play for that team up north, being the unchallenged early leaders they were, a young Chic Harley sat on the train headed for Ann Arbor. As the story goes, a local news paper writer who had recognized Chic sitting on the train, ran onto it, grabbed the young man and dragged him off, telling him he was from Ohio and would be a Buckeye.

Mr. Harley’s college career spanning from 1916-1919, would bring the Buckeyes national success and Ohio State’s first victory over their rival up north in 1919. In that 1919 game Chic not only ran the ball, but set OSU’s single game interception record picking the opponent off 4 times! His legend coming out of high school and amazing performances drew crowds so large, that The Ohio Stadium, affectionately known to Buckeye Nation as The Shoe, was built as a response to the overwhelming fan support and attendance.

#47 Chic Harley, the first of a long line of great Buckeye backs and the father of The Horseshoe.

As the clock struck midnight and year 2009 was left to be buried in the past, there were many questions that remained on the table for THE Ohio State Buckeyes.

A year filled with triumph, disappointment, doubt, and self relazation would be put on the wall next to all the years that had come prior to. The ghosts of national title hopes, and failed opprotunity hang on that very wall, and the list of individuals that had to endure those years reads like a college all star game. From the AJ Hawk’s, to the Troy Smith’s, to the Ted Ginn’s.. it has been a decade filled with almost reaching the ultimate goal, the crystal football, as many times as anyone within the college football ranks.

With these things lingering in the background of a story to be written on the field of roses in Pasadena, the Buckeyes took the field against a most worthy adversary in the hopes of leaving all the missed opprotunities…. all the labels behind.

The game started with a methodical drive down the field, showing not only to the Oregon defense but the Buckeyes themselves that they belong on the grand stage, playing for the highest accolades that are able to be achieved on the field used for playing college football. A calm silence of every young man on the field, not overcelebrating small victories. Just snap the ball.. execute.. move on to the next part of the plan..

All great plans… require great execution…

It was the first night of the new year, and the first time that anyone on this team would be able to enjoy the sweet moment that is victory. The Florida incident, the LSU debacle, Texas slipping away in the final moments in the desert.. now all in the past. For tonight it was Jim Tressel’s time to answer the questions of success. Terrelle Pryors moment to thank god while lost in the confusion of the camera flashes. It was time to see the Buckeyes with celebratory tears in their eyes while someone else walked off in the background to the locker room wondering what might have been. For legions of fans it was time to pop the bottles of champagne and share the embrace of victors, instead of drinking in an attempt to ease the pain.

In this year, and in that moment ,the chapter of 2009 in the book of Buckeye Football has been closed. What waits on the agenda for 2010? Well its just like Coach Tressel has said… in this moment we remember those who walked before and are now gone. Tonight is about victory and celebration… and we are only thinking about this victory in the Rose Bowl and what this night truely means to so many………

Go Bucks…….
